For those who prefer unconventionally, originality, and just plain out of the ordinary, the market of unique and novelty cakes provides an interesting and impressive array of memorable desserts. Expert bakers in the field can create almost anything you can imagine, ranging from the faces of celebrities to objects such as a rubik's cube. Whether for a birthday party, graduation, or even a wedding, dare to go outside of the box of traditional cakes.

The increasing popularity of cake decorating has resulted in more availability of specialty cake tools and supplies, and if you feel up to the challenge, you can bake and design your own cake. Specialty cake pans, molds, and cutouts are widely available supplies that make baking your own an easily accomplished feat. You can also opt to make a regular shaped caked, such as a rectangle or circle, but then incorporate interesting elements.

If your cake is traditionally shaped but you want to use your creativity on the design and pattern, then consider which type of frosting to use. Fondant is an immensely popular frosting used for novelty cakes, because it can be dyed into any color and then shaped into any form. It also holds up well to heat and adds a smooth and rounded finish to the cake. However, it can be expensive and has a distinct sugary taste and chewy texture, which may not be appealing to all. Buttercream is the more traditional frosting and is generally preferred for its taste and cost; unlike fondant, buttercream can't be used for complex shapes and you are limited to more surface decoration, such as piping. An option is to use a combination of both types of frosting, and you can have both the taste and design you want. If you are purchasing or baking a cake, make sure to sample a variety and choose a cake that is both pleasing to your palette and also to the eye.
