Apple Tarte Tatin

The first time I had this dessert was in a French restaurant in Ghana when I was in high-school and since then, it has been one of my favorite desserts!

Ingredients:

1 sheet of puff pastry (thawed)
5 Granny Smith apples
1/2 cup sugar
1/4 cup of salted butter
1 small egg (for egg-wash)
1 tablespoon of water

Directions:

1. Pour sugar in a frying pan and melt it on low heat
2. Add butter to caramelized sugar and stir in until completely melted
3. Pour into a 9-in Pyrex pie dish and let it harden
4. beat egg and 1 tablespoon of water in a cup and place on the side
5. while the caramel cools, peel apples and cut each apple into four
6. place and pack apples tightly in the pie dish
7. preheat oven to 375F
8. unfold puff pastry on floured surface
9. using a rolling pin, roll pastry sheet and place over the apples; tuck in the extra pastry inside the pie dish
10. brush the puff pastry with egg mixture
11. use a fork and poke a few holes in the pastry
12. place the pie dish on a baking tray, place in pre-heated oven and bake for 35 minutes
13. let the tarte tatin cool for about 15 minutes
14. loosen the edges of the tatin with a knife then place a plate over the baking dish and flip it over so the caramelized apples are on top

Serve warm with some vanilla ice-cream.
