The Most Popular Cookies - A Delicious Recipe For Sugar Cookies

Sugar cookies are made with eggs, vanilla, sugar, butter, flour and either baking soda or baking powder. They can be cut into any shape you like with a cookie cutter or stretched into shape by hand. The dough is sometimes very sticky so you might find that spraying it with water before shaping the cookies helps.

These cookies can be decorated with sprinkles, frosting or both. Decorated sugar cookies are popular all year but even more so at Halloween, Christmas and other holidays. Their delicious flavor and colorful appearance makes them attractive to children and adults alike.

There are various kinds of sugar cookies and some contain ingredients like orange juice, nutmeg, cinnamon, or aniseed. Another name for Mexican sugar cookies is "polvorones" and they are popular at Mexican weddings, fiestas, and holidays. They can also be enjoyed at home with a cup of coffee or hot chocolate.

These crumbly, rich cookies are found throughout Spain and Mexico during the holidays. They are simple to make and they keep for several days in an airtight container.

The History of Sugar Cookies

German protestants who settled in Pennsylvania in the mid-eighteenth century are credited with the invention of the "Nazareth Sugar Cookie," named after Nazareth, the part of Pennsylvania where they lived. This cookie has been Pennsylvania's official cookie since 2001.

It is thought that sugar cookies are derived from jumbles, which are a similar type of unleavened cookie. Jumbles can be traced back to medieval Arab cuisine, which contained a lot of sugar. These little cookies also contained spices and nuts and the Moors introduced the recipe to Spain.

Jumbles were baked thickly and would keep for up to a year, making them ideal for travelers. They were often baked in knot shapes. The nuts and spices were dropped from the jumbles recipe and sugar cookies were born.

Recipe for Mexican Sugar Cookies with Vanilla

This recipe makes delicious vanilla flavored cookies. You can frost them and add sprinkles when they are cool. Not every recipe for sugar cookies contains vanilla extract but it does give the cookies a really nice smell and flavor. The combination of shortening and butter gives these cookies plenty of rich flavor and also keeps them light and crumbly.

What you will need:

1/3 cup shortening
1/3 cup butter
2 cups all purpose flour
1 teaspoon baking powder
1 egg
1 teaspoon vanilla extract
3/4 cup white sugar
Pinch of salt

How to make them:

Preheat the oven to 375 degrees F. Beat the shortening with the butter, and then add the salt, baking powder, and sugar. Keep beating this mixture until it is well mixed. Add the vanilla and egg, then the flour. Divide the cookie dough in half, then cover it in plastic wrap and chill it in the refrigerator for a couple of hours.

Roll half the dough out to 1/8 inch thickness on a floured board and cut it using a cookie cutter. Arrange the cookies on an ungreased cookie sheet. Repeat with the other half of the dough. Bake the cookies for about seven minutes or until the bottoms are golden brown and the edges are firm. Let them cool on wire racks.

How Can a Small Business Profit From Customer Reviews?

Word-of-mouth marketing has changed completely for the small, local business. In the past, if someone had a bad experience, it may only reach a few of their friends. In today's world, with the ease of online review sites, social media, and blogging, a poor customer experience can reach hundreds or even thousands of people. This revolution has caught many owners off guard and they are scrambling to figure out how to manage and improve their online reputation. Many are hoping that Yelp will fail and online reviews will go away, but with Yelp's recent influx of $100 million in capital, they are going to double in size. Furthermore, AT&T will be launching a new review site, buzz.com. Customer content is exploding even more as the penetration of mobile devices makes it very easy to rave or rant at the moment it happens. Customers are posting about their experience before they even get the check! Here's a great example:

I don't know how I feel about paying $3.50 for a plain crepe. That's right. ONE. PLAIN. CREPE. $3.50!?! Anyways, I'm here right now waiting for my two crepes, starving and kind of still thinking that I paid too much for a crepe. It better be really really good. Waiting. Still waiting and there's only two other people here. Hungry. Eating. I'm not exactly impressed or satisfied right now. I should have just gone down the street to Osha and gotten real food. I got one plain crepe and a turkey and cheese crepe. Nothing special about them at all. What a waste. I'm going to cry one tear for my unsatisfied agony right now.

(Additional information: small restaurant with about 5 tables, in a decent neighborhood with an American Apparel across the street, has gelato, and accepts Visa and MC.)

The impact of reviews is very broad as well. 84% of Americans say online customer evaluations have an influence on their decision to purchase a product or service. (Opinion Research Corporation, 2009). You can no longer avoid monitoring these reviews. In addition, if you're business only has a few reviews, even if they are all positive, you are at an extreme risk. Just one bad review (1 star) can have an immediate impact on your overall rating and reputation. Therefore, you should work on a company or store wide campaign to generate reviews. There are a few other great reasons why reviews can benefit you:

What many business owners don't realize is that reviews have shown to actually increase profits and drive new business. Businesses with great reviews and online reputations use this as a competitive advantage over others in their area. Consumer research from the Kelsey Group reported, "Consumers are willing to pay at least 20% more for offline services that received an "Excellent" or 5-star rating than for the same service when it received a "Good" or 4-star rating, the study found. More importantly, merchants are seeing the effect on their bottom line. Of the 30 percent of small business retailers who had integrated product reviews into their Web sites, 43 percent said reviews had resulted in more sales, while 28 percent indicated reviews had resulted in more traffic. (Ratepoint, Nov 2009).

In addition, positive reviews can also help drive profits through search engine optimization and may impact your rankings on local search and general search results. For local search and mapping sites from Google, Bing, and Yahoo, the search are aggregating reviews from many sites and use both quantity and quality (overall rating) in their ranking algorithms. It helps to get great reviews across many different sites as well. For sites like Yelp and Citysearch, review quality and quantity are very strong influences on determining rankings. Reviews can even benefit you on general search engine rankings. The more review sites that have content about your business (and links to your site), the more this provides validation and "trust" from the search engine's perspective.

Review management is vital for success for local businesses. The chatmeter is designed to help you manage and monitor your reviews and save time from visiting over all these sites looking for your reviews.

Making Homemade Baked Ziti

Baked Ziti is an easy and popular Italian dish that you can make at home yourself. All you have to do is follow the basic recipe listed below.

The Sauce

While you could use jarred marinara sauce of the baked ziti if you are really pressed for time, the dish will be so much better if you make it yourself. Mastering marinara sauce is not that difficult, and it provides you with a base for numerous pasta recipes, including baked ziti.

To make marinara sauce, you will first need to get the following ingredients:

o 1/4 cup of olive oil

o 4 garlic cloves, halved

o A 35 ounce can of imported Italian tomatoes (can be substituted with fresh tomatoes if you prefer)

o 3 basil leaves, washed and chopped

o Salt

o Pepper

Pour the olive oil into a large sauce pan and add the garlic. Turn the heat to medium and cook until the garlic is soft and slightly browned. While it is cooking, crush the tomatoes, saving the juices.

Add to the garlic. Add in the basil and salt and pepper to taste. Bring the entire mixture to a boil, and then lower the heat so that it simmers. Cook the sauce for about 20 minutes or until thickened.

Baked Ziti

Once you have your sauce prepared you are ready to make your baked ziti. There is some debate as to whether the dish should contain ricotta cheese. Baked ziti does not. However, a very similar dish, Ziti Sorrentino, does have the ricotta added in. So you can choose to add it into this recipe or leave it out as you prefer.

To prepare baked ziti, you will need the following ingredients:

o One pound of ziti pasta

o 4 cups of marinara sauce, either jarred or from the recipe listed above

o 8 ounces of fresh shredded mozzarella

o 1/2 cup of fresh grated Parmigiano-Reggiano cheese

o Optional: 1 pound of ricotta cheese

Start by cooking the pasta. You will need to bring a large pot of water to a boil, and then add in the ziti. Cook until it is almost al dente, but remains somewhat undercooked - it will continue to cook while baking. Strain the pasta.

Preheat the oven to 375 degrees Fahrenheit. Pour the strained pasta into a large baking dish. Add in half of the sauce, half of the mozzarella cheese, and half of the Parmigiano-Reggiano cheese.

If you are using ricotta, add in all of it now. Toss with the pasta until it is well mixed. Top the mixture with the remaining sauce, and the sprinkle on the remaining cheese. Bake the baked ziti for 15 to 20 minutes, or until the cheese is melted and lightly browned. Serve immediately or freeze for a future meal. You can serve your baked ziti alongside a traditional Italian salad and some garlic bread.

To finish the meal, consider adding in a glass of fine Italian wine and even a slice of tiramisu or a bowl of gelato. This meal is so easy to prepare and so delicious you will look for excuses to cook.

Incredibly Delicious Italian Dessert Recipes For Dessert Lovers

In the history of desserts, famous Italian dessert recipes definitely stand out. Italian desserts range in flavor from bitter to sweet and they go nicely with a glass of wine. In Italy, the locals are just as likely to eat a piece of fruit for dessert as an indulgent, creamy confection.

If you have visited an Italian bakery, you will have seen many different varieties of cookies and biscotti. The Italians like to dunk their biscotti in red wine. A lot of Italian cookies are sweet but not excessively so and light glazes often provide most of the flavoring. Nuts or candied fruit are often added too. Biscotti might be very popular in the United States but in Italy hard, slightly sweet twice baked cookies are more popular. They are baked twice to remove as much moisture as possible, which makes the cookies dry, crumbly, and hard.

Which is the Most Famous Italian Dessert?

Tiramisu is thought to have originated in Siena. Duke Cosimo de Medici enjoyed it so much that it spread around the world with Italian immigrants. Tiramisu is a delicious combination of lady finger cookies, liquor, espresso, cocoa, mascarpone cheese, and eggs.

The best known Italian cake has to be panettone, which is from Milan. Boxes of this cake can be found in cafes and Italian bakeries during the holiday season all over the world. The fluffy panettone dough is flavored with raisins and candied fruit pieces and the cake is shaped like a dome. Italians enjoy panettone with zabaglione custard or mascarpone cheese and a glass of liqueur or dessert wine.

Perhaps you have tried Italian gelato. This is ice cream made with milk, sugar and flavoring. Sometimes it contains eggs and cream. Gelato is churned less than regular ice cream, making it less airy and more dense. Italian desserts are best eaten in moderation because a lot of them are very rich. If you find a lot of Italian desserts heavenly but a bit too rich, why not make your own and change the ingredients to tone them down a bit?

Using Jello in Italian Dessert Recipes

Gelato is a great candidate for experimentation with jello. Italian ice cream is nearly free of air, which makes it dense and super heavy. By combining gelato, boiling water, and jello powder, you can create a deliciously light dessert with a nice texture and any jello flavor you like. You can use sugar free jello to halve the calories because half the dessert is jello and the sugar free kind is also calorie free.

If you happen to own an ice cream machine, you can make gelato with kool aid and jello, which tastes great and makes a refreshing dessert on balmy summer evenings. Jello goes with a lot of ingredients, with fruit trifle being a great example.

Jello also goes nicely with fruit pieces, with custard or zabaglione or with chocolate. In fact, it is one of the most versatile dessert ingredients you can get and it is great for making Italian dessert recipes lighter. Dessert making is a creative process and you might feel like making a rich, luxurious tiramisu one day and healthier layer jello recipes the next.

Presenting - Toronto's Distillery District - a unique vision

As a European immigrant, historical districts always hold a great fascination for me. In recent years Toronto has been enriched by the revitalization of an entire district were: the Distillery District, a complex of 13 hectares with 44 buildings, made a stunning transformation from outdated industrial relics to one of the hottest entertainment Toronto. I have repeatedly visited the Distillery District last year, but saw a detailed presentation ofThis unique area was in order. After all, this complex only the Toronto area for pedestrians, is the largest and best preserved collection of Victorian industrial heritage buildings in North America, a site designated for the Arts and winner of numerous awards. I knew that, like architecture and history buff, I was in my element and was looking forward to discovering this unique neighborhood and Toronto.

I requested a meeting with Mathew Rosenblatt who handles mediaRelations for the Distillery District and was happy to discover that he is actually one of the owners of Cityscape who together with Dundee Realty are the developers of this heritage area unique. Matthew gave me a personal visit to learn the entire complex and I was extremely excited about this unique project for one of the main people behind this vision.

We started at the foot of Trinity Street and Mathew explained that it was about 150 years ago the shoreline of Lake OntarioRight at the end of this road. The area to the south, which now filled the entire Gardiner Expressway, the Via Railway corridor and the new waterfront, was not much later. In 1832 the mill was first built in this location when Toronto was in the house, only about 10,000 people. Mathew explained that these very different times: the local population would be dead animals on the ice during the winter, which would then contaminate the water of the lake when the ice melted were abandoned. AsThus he created the demand for alcoholic beverages.

Originally the distillery called "word, and Gooderham was" after two brothers-in-law, who started this business. But after James Wart wife died in childbirth, her husband was so distressed that she committed suicide, so by William Gooderham continued the business for himself. was eliminated because of the name "verb" with the official name of the company. James ghost is still said the word to the complex and the Distillery is haunted by a complexOfficial Website pursued in Toronto. His eldest son, one of 13 children, later joined William Gooderham in the distillery, and his name was taken, but this time the name Gooderham.

In the mid-19th century Gooderham distillery was the word's largest distillery in the world and under the condition raised up to 50% charge by the Canadian government. The oldest surviving building is the Stone Distillery Complex, a building of large limestone dating back to 1859. AllThe buildings have names that refer to their original function of the field, as the "Boiler House Complex," The case of inventory, "" The Cooperage "The Maltings" The Smoke House ", etc., to illustrate their original function of this facility.

Gooderham & verb produced whiskey and various hard liquors as well as industrial alcohols and antifreeze, used in both world wars. During World War acetone product is used for hardening the fabric wingsby aircraft. Hiram Walker Gooderham & verb was sold in 1920 and then sold to Allied Domecq in 1980 as part of a corporate takeover. In 1990, production stopped and this has transformed the complex into the largest film production location in North America. Along with many other big screen productions, TV productions and music videos, films like "X Men" Chicago, "" Cinderella Man "and" The Recruit "in everyone Distillery District. Hollywood star as they were shotAl Pacino, Meg Ryan, Richard Gere, Catherine Zeta-Jones, Rene Zellweger and Colin Farrell and many others have been immortalized.

In the narrow passage between the building and the Stone Distillery Complex Cooperage Mathew pointed out a sculpture called "Bronze Tree Root", a district of many exhibitions of art works that find a temporary home at the Distillery. Along the way Mathew pointed out, "Sports", a shop on the rich history and tradition of the sport, often focusedfrequented by women, looking for the perfect gift for their husbands. We also saw "AutoGrotto, specialty retailers in the automotive and motorcycle memorabilia and collectibles. Our walk continues to the Palace barrels and we entered the" Sandra Ainsley Gallery, a gallery, the works of major contemporary Canadian, American artists are recognized as international glass and mixed media. The background of industrial exposed brick, wooden beams and strategicallyilluminator provides a perfect backdrop for the hundreds of sculptures and works of art unique in the price range from several thousand to over one million dollars. Beauty and innovative design of these elements is surprising and sophisticated art collectors from around the world visit the Distillery District of Toronto for its 14 galleries and its dozens of studies.

Among the other tenants, the Maltings building that houses an unconventional clothing retailer called "Lile, with somethe most original name in jeans, clothing for men, women and children, as well as shoes, accessories, books and more. We turned eastwards and strolled-Tank House Lane. Matthew introduced me to the "Boiler House", one of the best restaurants in Toronto. With more restaurants, cafes and bakeries, the Distillery District offers a variety of excellent restaurants, local produce and baked foods casual very affordable. Various culinary delights are available in all price ranges. Only on the road"Arche" did an Italian restaurant, where no dish costs more than C $ 14 to ensure Mathew and his associates a requirement that restaurants would be affordable for all visitors. In addition to the extraordinary good value Italian cuisine, Archeo offers unique features: oversize archival photos of the distillery are used as dividers between the tables as partitions unusual aesthetic and innovative.

During our walk Tank House Lane,Matthew informed me that the stone-paved streets of the Distillery District to use pavers real since 1850, based in Cleveland. Cityscape bought in this complex, there was only dirt roads that had to be dug to install modern gas, sewer and power lines. When it came Repaving developers are looking for historically authentic material and found them near the city of Cleveland has sold its inventory of spare pavers. The developers wanted to useauthentic historic paving material, which come from another northern city, was long enough. So they went to Cleveland to secure this lot of historic paving.

For me a taste of the Distillery District, Matthew took me to "Soma", the manufacturer some of the best chocolate truffles, handmade chocolates, fresh baked cookies and ice cream from Toronto. Soma is craftsmanship and commitment to quality has made winners"Toronto's Choice Awards for the best chocolate. Matthew invited me to a" Mayan Chocolate Shot "taste in a coffee cup full size of chocolate the most aromatic medium-brown liquid that I have ever tasted. The taste is an intriguing mix of authentic Mayan chocolate, spiced with Australian ginger derivatives, Madagascar vanilla, orange peel, chili and Soma unique blend of spices.

Further down Tank House Lane is the Youth Centre for the Performing Arts, a 50,000 square foot state ofArts Performing Arts brand new facility and the results of a unique partnership between George Brown College and soul Pepper Theatre Company. Performing arts are big in Distillery District is just hosted a dance festival and is also the place for an annual Festival Opera Ballet. The district covered three and a festival of outdoor performance arts lovers delight with its variety of offerings.

We turned to Brewery Lane and walked through the Pure Spirits Oyster House andGrill, one of Toronto's most popular fish and fresh seafood restaurants. The barrel room is shipping an excellent environment for lunch or a drink after work and even in the middle of the afternoon, this restaurant was very busy. The 100-seat outdoor terrace was positively packed with people enjoying the sunny afternoon.

Mathew noted that each company in the Distillery District, one or two articles from the original distillery operations, and the Pure Spirits Oyster House andGrill offers an original wooden furniture and wooden door to pre-restoration. In a hallway behind the restaurant I saw a colorful decorated Mathew sure I was informed that one of William Gooderham, which among other things, the founder of the Bank of Toronto held as late as the Toronto Dominion Bank. throughout the district, is the integration of historical elements and modern adaptation of the original, an extraordinary example of architectureRevitalization. I liked the historical context, never feel like you're in a museum.

Directly opposite this restaurant is the home of "Mill Street Brewery, Toronto's most awarded micro-brewery that only the addition of a pub, beer, its circuit. Walking further south, the road opens in the space of large to be used for various outdoor performances throughout the year. Then we went back to the west if Heritage Lane on the right side features "Grand PianoBakery, a café with exposed brick walls and ancient atmosphere. Next Door "pictorial, with a gallery of international fame and emerging photographers, which holds monthly photo competitions.

On the south side of the case good case Goods Warehouse Lane, which houses "Artscape", a collective of artists and studios, many of which offer live demonstrations of their crafts, from hat making to ceramics, clothing design. Many of the studios are working in the districtare open to the public and Mathew explained that many of these artists to demonstrate their craft and processes real viewers.

When we showed our last cycle I Mathew the original mill that was originally introduced in England in 1832, the first part of the mill has been in the area. We went through the sales office for the pure spirits Condominiums are up just west of the historic Distillery District. Mathew explained that this project will help to offset theCost of renovation of this historic district and most of the condos were within a week, only for the opportunity to sell their position near the door of one of the most exciting and diverse entertainment in Toronto.

Speaking of real estate and architecture, I was especially in rehabilitation has declined 44 advance, obsolete industrial facilities interested in one of the hottest entertainment districts in North America. Mathew saidthat the revitalization project was difficult and very expensive, but only in about 18 months they turned 13 acres of obsolete unused industrial carcasses and more than 40 buildings in a visionary project that the trendsetter for industrial rehabilitation throughout North America.

Mathew explained that over 100 tenants at the Distillery represented all areas of arts, culture and entertainment, including restaurants and pubs, galleries, dealers,Theatrical performances and educational institutions, a kindergarten, the Early Learning Centre Distillery, George Brown College and the Voice Intermediate School are. What motivates him and examine his partner for this project were his visits to other international destinations where he wanted to explore the city, not as tourists, but to experience it, as the locals. And if you go to the Distillery District, there are tourist shops or souvenir or T-ShirtProducer. Instead, you'll find world-class art, culture and entertainment in all price ranges, and enjoy a full day in this place, even on a tight budget.

Cityscape selected their tenants very carefully. They have decided to chain stores and franchise as a whole and to waive some often lucrative leasing offers. In their place by deliberately to obtain high quality tenants with unique products and service offerings and a passion for their craft. Mathewadding that he wanted to combine big city sophistication with small town charm and compare the final product to the SOHO 1960. He and his partners wanted to be the city into a melting pot of disciplines and an incubator for new ideas.

According to Mathew are the key to the success of this project was the fact that Cityscape and Dundee Realty to maintain a position to take control of this project and the construction of a consistent vision from beginning to end. What distinguishes this project from otherDistricts is the conscious choice of tenants that developers dream of-a kind of mirror the center of culture, art and entertainment in a unique historic setting. The Distillery District is definitely succeeded and become the leading industrial regeneration projects across North America.

Fruitcakes and Stollen For the Holidays - Or How to Take the Work Out of Christmas Dessert

Snowflakes are falling, there's a nip in the air, and as you walk down the street, your friends and even strangers are wishing you, "Happy Holidays". Store windows are filled with charming wintry displays. In town, the holiday decorations are up and Christmas trees are brightly lit for all to see. It's that time of year again and the world is ready to celebrate - not only with decorations, but with delicious food.

"The worst gift is a fruitcake. There is only one fruitcake in the entire world, and people keep sending it to each other." -Johnny Carson

The Case for Fruitcake and Other New Ideas

Holiday deserts are the stuff of a traditional Christmas but for many, the thought of holiday baking is a daunting task. So, even though you've heard all the jokes about fruitcakes, and you may be using Aunt Janet's last year's fruitcake as a doorstop, this is the time to reconsider and put fruitcake back at the top of your preferred desserts list.

It's not that we're trying to revive your interest in fruitcake. It's just that the good news is - you don't have to bake it yourself anymore (unless you really want to). The idea is to take the work out of it and you can do it by ordering the best and the most scrumptious fruitcakes on line.

And yes - let's revive the fruitcake tradition! There are good reasons fruitcake has remained a favorite through the centuries. It's not only still welcomed as the star dessert after Christmas dinner, but it's nibbled right through to January, February and beyond. Fruitcake is also healthy! It's full of fruit and fiber and loaded with anti-oxidants. It's a confection that started way back in Roman times, was popularized in England (where it was called a Christmas cake), and is now literally an American family tradition.

The Festive German Stollen

On-line specialty desserts are hot this year when folks are looking for the best of the best and know they can find quality gifts and gourmet foods at competitive prices on the internet. If you're looking for a specialty cake as an edible gift, or something a little different to top off Christmas dinner, try a German Stollen, a loaf shaped fruitcake with a rich but subtle taste. A German Christmas is not considered complete without the traditional stollen. The Dutch have a similar version called Kertstol.

Stollens have great ingredients such as sultana raisins, wheat flour, butter, almonds, rum, sherry, and brandy, giving them a distinctively rich taste all their own. The Christmas Stollen was baked in the 15th century in Dresden and remains as an extremely popular confection throughout the world. Don't try to bake it yourself of course (unless you really want to). You can order one on the internet.

Starting New Family Food Traditions - The Holiday Dessert Table

What about offering something completely new - a Holiday Dessert Table - to start your own Christmas tradition? A special table set aside and filled with all the delicious things you can find (both on-line and off), decorated with some confections wrapped as gifts for your guests, can start a brand new trend. Invite friends to bring their contributions too and start an annual neighborhood tradition. Adding new desserts will make the party unusual, interesting and exciting.

Ideas for your Holiday Dessert Table include traditional fruit cakes and stollen of course, plus cranberry-lemon cake (featuring fresh cranberries baked under a tangy lemon batter).
